Amica Senior Lifestyles

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Amica Senior Lifestyles is a private Canadian company that offers housing, care, and services for seniors at 31 premium senior living residences in British Columbia, Alberta, and Ontario. Amica residences provide different senior care options such as Independent Living (IL), Assisted Living (AL), and Memory Care (MC) with specially designed programs and spaces for seniors living with Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia.[1][2][3]

History

Amica was founded in 1996 as Amica Mature Lifestyles. In 2015, Amica Mature Lifestyles was acquired by BayBridge Seniors Housing, an investee of the Ontario Teachers’ Pension Plan.[1][4][5] In 2018, the integrated company rebranded as Amica Senior Lifestyles, designing, developing, marketing, and managing senior luxury residences.[6][7][8] By the year 2019, Amica was serving approximately 5,300 residents.[9]

Amica’s head office is based in Toronto, Ontario, and its portfolio includes 29 owned retirement residences,[4] two managed but not owned residences, and a pipeline of residences in development under construction. Many residences include spas, fitness centers, and movie theatres. As of March 2021, Amica employs over 3,201 team members across Canada.

Social contribution

In 2003, Amica established the Amica Helping Hands Charity, a registered Canadian charity, to support Canadian seniors in need by providing them with goods, funds, and services.[22] The charity receives corporate sponsorship from Amica’s partners across the country, while the residents and staff hold several fundraising events for the project every year.

Amica Helping Hands Charity distributes gift baskets to vulnerable seniors and donates to organizations such as Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre,[10] the William Osler Health System Foundation ‘Peel Memorial Centre’[11], and Lion’s Gate Hospital Foundation.[12[13][14][15]

In June 2021, Amica installed a beehive with 30,000 pollinators in partnership with the urban beekeeping group Aveole to raise awareness for bees and their importance to ecosystems.[23]

COVID-19 Response

Amica organized wellness protocols, virtual workshops, and masked, socially distanced activities for residents to stay connected when regions were in lockdown.[16]

Amica joined the Canadian Alliance to Protect and Equip Seniors Living (CAPES), a volunteer-based initiative that sources, supplies, and shares PPE across the seniors living sector.[17]

In April 2020, Amica launched the Smiles for Seniors campaign. Through a website, it showcases artwork, videos, and photography created by Canadians to help combat feelings of loneliness and isolation for seniors everywhere.[2]

Amica worked with health organizations such as Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre to help with vaccine studies. It compiled a survey report Baby Boomers and Seniors Coronavirus Survey[18] between September and October 2020, by studying a representative group of 1,409 baby boomers and seniors from the United States and Canada about their dietary behaviors during the pandemic.[19][20][21]

In October 2021, to celebrate Mental Health Day, Amica collaborated with Roy Thomson Hall, a concert hall in Toronto, to create the Lyrics and Legacies program. It enabled residents to work with musicians and create their own songs and music.[24]
